As homeowners, business owners, designers, and architects, at some point in our lives, we’ll have to face a roofing project. It can be new construction, an update, fixing leaks or malfunctions to the roof. Today we’ll compare unpainted metal and pre-painted metal panels.

Unpainted Panels

Using Galvanized steel or Galvalume ® steel is an economical choice for roofing panels. Both types of steel are available in varied gauges of thicknesses. Usually, material is readily available, which helps with tight construction schedules and minimizes the lead time in production. Galvalume offers a warranty against corrosion.

Aluminum and Stainless steel are very corrosion resistant. These substrates are used in projects located near water or corrosive environments. These metals do not offer warranty.

Painted Panels

Using pre-painted panels provides extra protection against corrosion. CMI’s standard use of Kynar 500® paint system provides superior color retention. There are 20 standard colors to choose from. In addition, there are metallic and weathered colors. Paint warranty varies from 25 to 40 years.

Compared to unpainted panels, pre-painted panels increase in price and are ordered at time of placing order. Color and quantity requirements will impact the lead time of the roofing panels availability and delivery.

Which should you go with?

Choosing unpainted or painted panels will come down to personal preference and price. Once you get down to it, they are both fantastic roofs and will last a very long time! Whether you are looking for unpainted or painted metal roofing Corrugated Metals is here to serve!

Corrugated Metals, Inc. is proud to announce that it was awarded OSHA’s Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP). It became the 35th employer in Illinois to have achieved this prestigious OSHA Cooperative Program.

The program recognizes small business employers who have used OSHA's On-Site Consultation Program services and operate an exemplary safety and health programs. Acceptance into SHARP from OSHA is an achievement of status that singles out business among peers as a model for worksite safety and health.

Some of the benefits of SHARP:

  • Boost employee morale by creating a safe, healthy workplace.
  • Involve employees to continuously improve workplace conditions.

Cristin Middlesworth, Production Manager who implemented the program stated, “I am proud of the transformation that has taken place with all of our employees.  The employees worked hard to make our workplace a safety first environment and continue to do so.  Achieving OSHA’s SHARP status is a tremendous achievement.  I am thankful for the support of the IL DOL’s consultation program and the Illinois Manufacturing Extension Center (IMEC).”

Vice President, Ken Carlton stated during company’s recognition ceremony, “The most important factor in the fulfillment of our mission is safety. The achievement of SHARP recognition demonstrates our employees' dedication to the task of ensuring that everyone goes home at the end of the day in the same condition in which they arrived. Credit for this achievement goes to our Plant Manager, Cristin Middlesworth and our entire plant staff for their efforts. We will use the SHARP recognition not as an end, but as a way-point in our goal of best practices in plant safety. We thank OSHA and the Illinois Department of Labor for honoring our company with SHARP recognition.”

Featured project: pier 17, NYC

Corrugated Metal’s roots come from New York, so we were honored to provide our services for this project. We worked with a local New York supplier by roll forming Zinc flat sheets into 2.67 x 7/8 sinewave profile. Since zinc has a soft temper, it can be tricky to form. CMI's production team worked endlessly to perfect the panels. Sinewave profile panels are used throughout the building as exterior siding as well as wall cladding.

South Street Seaport is a historic area in New York City. The original Pier 17 was torn down in 2014 as part of broader redevelopment of the neighborhood. The new pier containing retail, restaurants, and a rooftop performance venue is set to open this summer.

The picture below was taken by Tribeca Citizen, a local website that provides guidance to locals in regards to new shops, restaurants, and real estate. They had an opportunity to visit the project before it opens.

Anodized aluminum applications: building endless possibilities

Posted by Ken Carlton

Apr 11, 2018 2:07:00 PM

Anodized products and components are used in thousands of construction and architectural projects. Most of us use anodized aluminum while cooking as it's widely used in cookware.

CMI has collaborated with Lorin Industries, a world leader in coil anodizing finish solutions. Coil Anodizing is an electrochemical process, that grows the aluminum oxide layer from the the surface of the aluminum, not an applied coating.

Benefits of anodized aluminum:

  • Durable and Abrasion Resistant
    • The aluminum oxide layer is integral with aluminum substrate, therefore it can’t chip, flake, or peel. It will resist surface scratches
  • Corrosion Resistant
    • Salt water exposure will not corrode an anodized aluminum surface because of water's neutral pH.
    • Anodized aluminum will not patina like copper and zinc, nor rust like steel, nor weather like brass.
  • Strength of Anodized Aluminum
    • Anodized aluminum will flex or deflect more than steel which softens the force of impact loads.
  • Can replace the look of expensive stainless steel

Several finishes are available as well as colored options.

Corrugated Metals, Inc. manufactures products from anodized aluminum for exterior applications such as:

  • Rains Screens
  • Sun shades
  • Roofing
  • Parking garage screens

Occasionally, we'll feature projects that Corrugated Metals Inc. had assisted on. I'd like to present a siding project on a three family residence in Brooklyn, NY.

Brooklyn is a borough of neighborhoods, more than 30. For young professionals from all over the US, Brooklyn has become a hot place to live.

Corrugated Metals Inc. 2.67" x 7/8" sinewave panel was specified on this project by Resituated, an interdisciplinary design studio integrating architecture, redevelopment, and placemaking. The panels were made from 24ga Galvalume in Slate Gray. The diagonal installation provides a unique facade.

Our team is looking forward to working with Resituated again in the near future and we hope to assist you on your next project.

not only for roofing

Traditionally, corrugated metal has been used as exterior cladding such as roofing or siding.

However, utilizing corrugated metal in a wide variety of applications is growing. There are many good reasons to use corrugated metal. Among the most prevalent are a clean, sleek appearance, strength, product life-cycle, cost efficiency, and the ability to give particular space a unique appearance.

Some of different uses for corrugated metal panels are:

Fencing: When used with appropriate farming/posts, it will last for years to come!

Garden Beds: Use corrugated metal panels as fascia of a flower bed.

Ceiling: Application such as this provides stout feeling to any room. It's a unique way to update an all season room.
